Computer Ergonomics

1139419_keyboard

Computers have become an integral part of our way of life.  Unfortunately, many people who use computers have improper ergonomics at work or at home which causes them to experience a variety of symptoms such as fatigue, muscle discomfort, and headaches.

Here is a link to a Ministry of Labour website which contains a document that will give you the proper guidelines on how to properly setup your workstation.

Natural Sore Throat Remedies

Sorethraot

I had a sore throat coming on last week and fought it off successfully with natural methods. Many people just grap the medicine from the drug store but I like to try to avoid those chemicals and drugs whenever possible.

Here are some methods to fight off a sore throat (I did them all!);

  • gargle with salt water (or baking soda)
  • drink lemon tea (with honey if your diet allows)
  • take Cold FX (I swear by this stuff!)
  • take extra multivitamins
  • Take Vitamin C
  • eat foods rich in antioxidants
  • take slippery elm supplement (better than zinc)

No need to just mask the symptoms and have this cold/bug for a week or longer, fight it naturally and cure it within days or less.

How To Get Better Sleep

In my free e-book I talk about the life of an entrepreneur named Jimmy. One of his problems is sleep and here is what I say:

In order to improve your sleep, you should end each day with an activity that is pleasurable and relaxing. Leave your work in the office or at least stop a few hours before bed like I do so that when you leave the office, you can get away from it and unwind in a healthy manner.

Develop healthy habits. Eat nutritiously throughout the day and engage in one form of exercise or another on a regular basis. Allow your body to get into a sleep rhythm by going to bed and waking up at approximately the same time every day (this includes weekends, holidays and days off).

Do not eat a big meal before you retire for the night. In addition, make sure you limit your sugar, caffeine and alcohol intake before bedtime. If you are a smoker, here is yet another reason to quit: cigarettes are stimulating to the central nervous system and can make it hard to fall asleep.

It is best to sleep in total darkness and not have the bathroom light or a night light shining in your eyes. Use your bedroom as the room for rest and relaxation. Refrain from watching television in your bedroom before you nod off and do not bring your laptop or Blackberry to bed with you!

It’s a Date - Best Before or Expiry?

by Ellie Topp, P.H.Ec.

With stories in the news about Listeria and other causes of foodborne illness, consumers are

beginning to pay more attention to issues of food safety. Many packaged foods are stamped with

dates that are prefaced by the words ‘best before’, ‘packaged on’, ‘sell by’, and even ‘best if used

before’. A look at the intended meaning of these dates may be helpful to alleviate confusion.

ADHD Drug Warning

This subject has been in the news more and more lately. Parents of children taking drugs like Ritalin need to be fully aware of the risks involved, as well as other treatment options that are often more effective.

Watch this clip from CBS for more information about the latest study showing an association between ADHD drugs and sudden cardiac death in children.

If you eat the marshmallow you don’t get a second one

Pb

This was told to a group of four year olds. They were left in a room for 45 minutes with 1 marshmallow and told that if they could resist the temptation by not eating it, they would receive a second marshmallow after the 50 minutes.

Most of the kids ate it as soon as the man left the room. Some licked it, some pressed it up against their eyes, some of the kids smelt it like it was the greatest smell in the world. The end result was that 2/3 ate it and 1/3 didn’t.

When they looked forward 15 years they found that the 1/3 that didn’t eat it where more successful in life (school, grades, work) than the 2/3’s that did eat it. Because the 1/3 of the group was willing to sacrifice immediate gratification in order to gain more in the end. I really like this but I thought it would apply much more accurately to our desire to eat as it relates to achieving a healthy and lean body.

When it comes to eating healthy I see 3 groups of people. One group of people just don’t care and will eat anything they want because the reward is not as important as the satisfaction of taste and their immediate desire to eat (like the kids that ate it as soon as the man left).

Another group will have a very hard time and will try really hard to convince themselves they should wait but can’t help themselves but cheat, they are the type that will end up eating a bowl of ice cream and Doritos at night because they were good during the day, and then tell me that they are following their diet (like the kids that licked it or ate the inside to make it look like they didn’t eat it).

Then there’s the last group.  The serious group who we admire for having the self-discipline, except we sometimes call them boring to make us feel better. This is the group who will stick to it, the one’s that drink soda water at a party, that don’t even think of having desert, that carry around there food in a Tupperware.

So think of these kids next time you go to reach for some bad food and remember that the reward of stepping away and not eating the marshmallow will be well worth it in the end.

5 Ways To Stop Yourself From Over Eating

Hd

Pre-water it

Try drinking 2 large glasses of water before you eat, this will help fill you up with good healthy water to reduce the feeling of starvation you get before supper.

Slow down your speed

It takes the brain about 10 minutes to realise that the stomach is full, so slow it down. Eating fast is not good for the digestion system and makes you over eat. Try to make a conscious effort of chewing your food a lot, taking breaks while you socialise and try to avoid working or watching TV at the same time as eating.

Fibre first

Fibre helps you feel full so why not take those 2 big glasses of water with a little bit of fibre before you eat a meal. The added bonus is most people don’t get enough fibre in their diet in the first place. If you’re not that “hard core” try to eat your salad first, take a little break and then eat the rest of your food.

Sugars again

I’ve said it before and I'll say it again. The more sugar you have in your diet the more cravings you will get. Try to reduce those sugars so you’re not tempted to eat desert after you just ate your food.

Set rules

All of these 4 appetite suppressing techniques will not work if you just don’t care. Your goal needs to be more important than the short term satisfaction of the taste of food. Setting yourself rules always helps. Your rules could be “no deserts” or “only one cheat a week” or “no drinking on weekdays”.

A word about mindset: My mother in law cooks great deserts and always tells us that she doesn’t like the taste of deserts and even chocolate, whether or not that’s true or it’s just her way to psych herself out of them, kudos to her for sticking to her rules. Whatever rules may be, make sure that you stick by them no matter what situation you’re in.

Sleep to Lose Weight

Sleep

Sleep is an important aspect of weight loss and overall health. Many people think that getting only 5-6 hours of sleep is sufficient since they feel ok day to day after having a coffee or 2.

This is not normal nor healthy. We really do need 8+ hours of sleep a night and the hours before midnight are the most important. So early to bed - early to rise is key.

So if you're eating well and training hard and not sure why you aren't as lean as you want to be perhaps taking a better look at your sleep pattern and changing it around might be the missing link.

What is a doula?

(Taken from DONA International)

The word "doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

For more information on doulas, please visit the DONA International website.

What are the benefits of breastfeeding my baby?

(Taken from La Leche League International)

There are many benefits to breastfeeding your baby! "Human milk provides the specific nutrients that babies need to grow, both in size and maturity... " (THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, 7th Revised Edition, page 340). Your milk is made to order for your baby. Research points to the significant value to infants, mothers, families and the environment from breastfeeding.

Benefits for Baby

Chapter 18 of THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, 7th Revised Edition, "Human Milk for Human Babies ," documents the benefits of breastfeeding such as the antibodies in it to protect the baby from illness. For example, a study in the

Philippines

showed that, "Deaths from respiratory infections and diarrhea were eight to ten times higher in babies who were artificially fed than in those who were even partiaully breastfed for six months " (THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, 7th Revised Edition, page 350). Breastfed babies have a decreased likelihood for allergies and dental caries. They also benefit from appropriate jaw, teeth and speech development as well as overall facial development. This means that people who were artificially fed may experience more trips to doctors and dentists

Benefits for Mother

Chapter 19 of THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, "How Breastfeeding Affects a Mother," describes some of the physical benefits of breastfeeding for the mother such as reduced rates of breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The time saved for mother is immense also. As a breastfeeding mother, you can feed your baby even during stressful times such as when normal supplies of food and water are not available.

Benefits for Employers

Breastfed babies are healthier babies; thus, mothers who are employed outside the home are likely to miss fewer days of work according to a study in the BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK, 3rd Revised edition on page 242.

Benefits for the Environment

The article "A Quick Look at Breastfeeding's Most Revolutionary Year Yet," by Dia Michels describes the environmentally friendly benefits of breastfeeding. Simply put, human milk is delivered without excess packaging or processing and thus contributes to the health of our planet.
